Peebles County v Fauldhouse Victoria Cricket Club 2s on Sat 05 May 2007 at 1.30pm
Fauldhouse Victoria Cricket Club Lost Fauldhouse lost by 64 Runs
after a great week weather wise, and much practice from last week, the team set off for peebles,
as a captain who likes to do his homework on teams, i expected this to be THE toughest of games, scottish internationalist, katherine white, won the toss and elected to bat. i would have loved to bat first but nevermind...
franny and ronnie opened our bowling attack, and much like last week, they were inconsistent, but not bad, if you know what i mean, the peebles opening pair looked good, with captain white looking ok, until ronnie trapped her on the back foot, PLUM lbw was awarded, the score at this point was 29/1/10,
at this point, aussie darren chatt came to the crease, he settled really quickly, indeed his 4th scoring shot was a massive 6 off of josh who was gobsmacked !!! "that was middle and off and on a good length too" he said. i agreed, but told him he was lucky and you will get him shortly !!!! josh bowled reasonably, whereas midi started nervously, midi being too hard on himself wanted to come off, but i explained that he will bowl 9 whether he gets hit for 60 or not !!!,
little did i know that jamie would later get hit for 60..
my plan was for bob and jamie to finish our overs, but i had to bring bob on earlier as these guys were very good batsmen, so after 22 overs the score was 85/1/22.
bob kept it tight with midi still on the other end, and there was a spell when i thought we were getting back into the game, from 21 overs till the 33rd they put on 42 runs in 13 overs, so the brakes were on, jamie replaced midi, and the game was on, knowing from 29 overs, that our fielding had to be good, with jamie and bob bowling, i was expecting wickets to fall regularly, sadly, our fielders let us down, franny and midi in particular seemed to look almost drunk at times, but to be fair, it was a dodgy, rutted, football park. so the ball could make you look silly.
there was no excuse however for the ball being in the air, and not getting taken. franny was inside the boundary too many times, when the ball passed between him and the boundary line, CARDINAL SIN, and is something we will brush up on, young franny had a huge responsibility, and never ever lets you down, but today was his bad day !! i as captain in hindsight should have fielded where he was, so that was a big mistake on my part. midi dropped a clanger at deep midwicket. so young master mildren was asked to replace him. something he was eager to do !!
jamie bowled a lot of good balls, but he got affected by this classy batsmen, and he wasnt his usual switched on self. a lesson he got here, no doubts.
the peebles batsmen had an uncanny knack for bludgeoning any ball down leg, and even bobo was guilty of that. with an over or two to go, the batsmen smacked a ball, slightly shorter to deep mid wicket, young james came rushing in, and at full length, he got his hands to it. a great effort. and something he was dissapointed in. well, he dusted himself down, and sure enough he got another chance late on,
the legend that is lovetheswanny hit a ball to deep midwicket, and young james was on the boundary, caught the ball, his momentum took him over the line, but having the awareness to throw the ball back up in the air as he went over the line, and then catch it again in play, was truly remarkable, and will be a talking point for years to come,
peebles finally smacked their way to 226/3
i was gobsmacked, more at our lack of wickets than anything else.
our fielding was terrible, all over the field. with james mildren and myself apart.
the batting line up was changed to accomodate a big hitter early doors, with a wee prayer that robbo could give us a base.
so franny being 9 last week, opened the batting this week.
he and rob looked good against an average bowling attack. until franny got bowled trying a leg glance, the score was 25/1/8
rob meanwhile raced to 45 with young midi alongside, and playing straight.
the next change bowlers were ok, but the outfield being fast, it was a batsmens dream.
these two put on a merited 61 before midi was caught out to a mad bottom handed dolly shot.
ronnie went in at 4 to see if he could replicate his batting the week before, but he went for a duck playing the same shot as midi !!!! something that was most unusual.
i dropped myself further down to allow billy to have a go, hoping for a magic 50 , but he was caught out trying a late pull, from swann, who was more an off cutter dolly dropper. but he was effective.
rob meanwhile was batting like 5 years ago. and with me being beside him, it was hoped we could have a big partnership.
he eventually got put out for 75, getting bowled off miss white, who got the benefit of some low / high bounce from the one side.
jamie came in, and it was back to the usual, stepping back trying to play on the offside to a straight ball.
james came in and faced mr swann, who rubbed his hands at the prospect of bowling at a leftie,
sure enough, and for the first time i can remember, james`s technique let him down. bowled for a golden.
in came steven connell and he and i put on a healthy 24 runs in a 5 over period, with him scoring 10.
he also got bowled by a bowler thinking its his birthday with all the lack of straight players in opposition !!!
bob came in and lasted 3 balls before he joined the duck club. altho on this occasion, the ball was a beauty.
mr swanns 4th wicket was his best.
josh was the last man, and looked ok. indeed he listened and played to instructions, and the shot of the day was reserved for him, when his only scoring shot was a glorious mid off drive.
he finally got bowled playing his usual, step back and drive shot, to a straight ball, ala jamie !!
i was left stranded on 36 no.
so we finished on a respectable, but could have been so much better 162
well played rob. his 75 was great, but the highlight was james`s catch
the day was dissapointing in respect of our fielding, bowling, but most of all, our despondent attitude !!!!! you wait all week on a game and then get dissapointed a quarter of the way through !!!! that will have to change....
